This position requires love, patience, and respect for children. We must encourage the children to be independent and model for them appropriate manners and behaviors. We present activities designed to promote social, physical, and intellectual growth following the philosophies of Maria Montessori by performing the following duties:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
include the following - Other duties may be assigned.
Adhere to school safety policies and procedures, including licensing and educational requirements.
Become knowledgeable with Montessori terminology and methods.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with children, parents, and co-workers.
Supervise the extended day students; snack, play and clean-up.
Help the Guide in providing the children with a “prepared environment”.
Keep the classroom clean and inviting.
Replenish any supplies/paper, as necessary.
Maintain the practical life area of the classroom: dishes, snack supplies, cleaning supplies.
Help the child:
...by allowing them to be as independent as possible.
...serve themselves snacks and lunch -offering help only where necessary for the safety and wellbeing of the child.
...clean up during and after the lunch period where necessary.
...prepare to go outside for recess -applying sunscreen/dressing for winter play.
...with toileting while demonstrating respect for the child.
...preparing for nap: Setting up cots, toileting, reading stories/helping them settle for rest.
...waking -toileting, cleanup or change if necessary.
Responsible for cleanliness of room in the following areas:
Sweep as needed.
Mop as needed.
Maintain bathrooms where necessary.
Disinfecting work tables and materials as needed
Maintain a sanitary food area -wash dishes regularly and clean when necessary
Supervision
An on-call substitute must be supervised by a more senior classroom staff member at all times, except while supervising sleeping children during nap. On-call substitutes report to the Building Assistant.
Physical Requirements:
Must have the ability to:
Lift up to 40 lbs.
Repetitive bending, stretching, and stooping
Climb up and down stairs
Have mobility required to ensure the safety of the children
Work outdoors in any variety of weather
Have visual and hearing capabilities that allow consistent supervision of children according to MN state licensing requirements
Perform light-duty cleaning
Light typing and work-processing duties
Qualifications
Must meet MN DCYF licensing qualifications as an Aide
Must have current Pediatric CPR, First Aid, and Abusive Head Trauma training, or be willing to attain these within 90 days of hire.
Must pass federal background check, as mandated by MN DCYF
Schedule
This is an on-call position. The Head of School, Building Assistant, or other JMS staff may contact persons in this position by phone or email with or without advance notice of work opportunities. The On-Call Substitute may accept or decline work shifts as they become available.
